What Gets Checked

An Inspection Covers the Whole System

Not just the part you can see from the sofa. Here is what we go through.

  • The flue, top to bottomHow much creosote has built up, whether it is the flaky kind or the hard glazed kind, and whether anything is blocking the draw.
  • Crown, cap and stackCracks in the crown, a cap that is missing or rusted, loose or spalling brickwork, and the flashing where the stack meets the roof.
  • Liner conditionCracked tiles, open joints, or a gap where heat could reach the timbers. This matters most for safety and is the part you cannot see from the room.
  • Firebox and damperCracks in the firebox, and whether the damper actually opens, closes and seals.
  • Draft testA chimney that does not draw pushes smoke back into the room. We test it rather than assume it.
  • A written reportYou get what we found in writing, with a free estimate on anything that needs doing. No obligation to use us for the fix.

Level 1 vs Level 2

Which Inspection Do You Need?

Two different standards, and they are not interchangeable. Here is the plain-English version.

1

Level 1 — the routine one

A visual check of everything reachable without tools: the flue, firebox, damper, crown and cap. This is what goes with an annual sweep on a chimney that has been working normally and has not changed.

2

Level 2 — the camera one

Everything in Level 1, plus a video camera run down the full length of the flue so the liner can be seen joint by joint. Nothing is guessed at.

3

When Level 2 is the right call

Buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, after storm damage, or any time you change the appliance or the fuel. In those cases a visual check is not enough — the damage is usually inside the liner.
