FREE Chimney Top Check

We Look First, You Decide After

Almost nobody can see their own chimney top. So we go up, photograph the crown, the cap and the flue opening, and show you the pictures on the spot — then hand you a flat written price, whether it is a new cap going on bare masonry or a rusted one coming off. Nothing is ordered until you say so.

Single-family homes across metro Atlanta. No trip fee and no charge for the inspection, whether or not you go ahead with the cap. Steep or unsafe roofs we will tell you about rather than climb.

What a Cap Job Includes

A Cap That Fits Your Chimney, Not a Near Enough One

Replacing a dead cap or fitting the first one your chimney has ever had — either way the whole top gets dealt with in one visit.

  • The old cap off and outRusted lids, rotted mesh and whatever someone wired on before us comes down off the roof with us, not into your garden.
  • Measured to your flueRound, square, oval, one flue or four — we measure the actual opening rather than guessing at a size off a shelf.
  • Stainless, not galvanisedGalvanised steel is what rusted through on the cap we are taking off. Stainless costs a little more and does not come back.
  • Crown checked while we are up thereThe concrete slab the cap sits on is usually the next thing to go. If it is cracked we show you and quote it — we do not reseal it without asking.
  • Draft tested before we goA cap sitting too low or with the wrong mesh can choke a flue. We light it and watch it draw properly before we call the job done.
Honest Pricing

Why we quote instead of listing a price

Caps are not a catalogue item. A round stainless cap on a single flue is one of the cheapest jobs we do. A made-to-measure lid spanning a four-flue chimney top is a different thing entirely.

So rather than advertise a number that changes the moment we see your roof, we measure your actual chimney and give you a free estimate in writing — then you decide.

When to Replace It

Three Signs the Cap Is Finished

A cap is a cheap part doing a hard job in the weather. These are what it looks like when it has stopped doing it — and if there is no cap up there at all, every one of them applies already.

Rust Streaks Down the Brick

Brown streaks running down from the top of the chimney are the galvanised cap above them rusting away. By the time it shows on the brickwork, the lid and the mesh are usually both going.

Damp or Debris in the Firebox

Water stains after rain, leaves in the grate, a smell in warm weather. Anything landing in your firebox came in through the top, which means there is nothing up there stopping it.

Scratching, Chirping, Nesting

Noise in the chimney in spring means something has moved in through an open flue. The animals have to come out before a cap goes on, and we will tell you if that is what you are hearing.

While We Are Up There

The Rest of the Chimney, Too

A cap is rarely the only thing a chimney needs. This is the other work we do, each piece looked at during the same free inspection and quoted in writing before anything starts.

Crack Repair

Cracks in the crown, the stack and the firebox. Water gets into a hairline crack, freezes, and opens it a little wider every winter. We clean it out and seal it before the masonry starts coming apart.

Tuckpointing

The mortar between the bricks is softer than the brick and always fails first. We rake out the joints that have gone and repoint them, so the stack is holding itself up again rather than leaning on what is left.

Cap Restoration

Not every cap needs replacing. If the frame is still solid and only the mesh or the finish has gone, we strip it back, re-mesh it and refinish it — which costs less than a new one. We will tell you honestly which yours is.

Fireplace Repair

Dampers that will not close, cracked firebrick, loose refractory panels and failed mortar joints inside the firebox. The parts you actually sit in front of, put back the way they should be.

Questions & Answers

Chimney Cap FAQ

The things people ask us most before booking.

How much does a new chimney cap cost in Atlanta?

It depends on the size and shape of your chimney top and how many flues it has. A standard round stainless cap is one of the cheaper jobs we do; a made-to-measure lid covering a wide multi-flue top costs more. We get on the roof, measure it and give you a flat written price before anything is ordered. The look is always free.

My chimney has never had a cap. Can you fit one?

Yes, and it is the same visit either way. We measure the flue opening, check the crown is sound enough to take the fixings, and fit a stainless cap to it. If the crown is cracked we will say so and quote that separately rather than bolting a new cap to masonry that is coming apart.

How do I know if my chimney cap needs replacing?

The usual signs are rust streaks down the brickwork, a lid you can see is bent or missing, mesh that has rotted through, water or damp in the firebox after rain, or birds and squirrels getting in. If you cannot see your chimney top from the ground, that is what the free inspection is for.

What does a chimney cap actually do?

Three things. It keeps rain, leaves and snow out of the flue, which is what rots liners and dampers from the inside. It stops birds, squirrels and raccoons nesting in an open stack. And the mesh works as a spark arrestor, so embers stay in the chimney instead of landing on your roof.

Can you cap a chimney that has more than one flue?

Yes. A wide top with two or more flues takes a multi-flue cap, which is a single stainless lid spanning the whole crown rather than separate caps on each pipe. We measure the top, have the lid made to that size and fit it to the masonry. There are photos of exactly that job further up this page.

How long does a cap replacement take?

A standard stainless cap is usually on and secured inside an hour once we are on the roof, and it often goes on the same visit. An odd-shaped or multi-flue top has to be measured first and the lid made to size, so that one comes back as a second trip. We tell you which it is when we quote.

Do I need a sweep at the same time?

Often yes, and we will tell you straight if you do not. A cap that has been missing or broken for a while means rain, leaves and animal debris have been going down the flue, and that needs clearing before you light a fire. We check while we are up there and quote both, free either way.

Do you do chimney masonry repairs as well as caps?

Yes. Crack repair on the crown and the stack, tuckpointing where the mortar joints have failed, cap restoration where the frame is still good, and firebox and damper work inside the house. It is all looked at during the same free inspection, and each piece is quoted separately in writing so you can take some of it and leave the rest.

What is tuckpointing and does my chimney need it?

Tuckpointing is raking out the old mortar between the bricks and packing in fresh mortar. Mortar is deliberately softer than brick, so it crumbles first and lets water into the stack. If you can scrape the joints out with a key, or there is sand collecting at the base of the chimney, it is due.
